Laws & Regulations

Health supplements including herbal medicines are regulated as conventional medicines, over the counter medicines and as self-medications and come under the guidance of the Ministry of Health.  Manufacturing GMP's are the same as for conventional medicines.  These manufacturing regulations are supported by plant inspections and guidelines require that safety data is provided and substantiated.

Cameroon presently has a list of registered herbal medicines which would be sold with the same regulations and in the same channels as prescription medicines.  Other channels of distribution include specialty shops and peddlers.

A post-marketing surveillance system is in development.

Laws, regulations and national policy are currently in the development phase.

Standards & Guidelines

The government of Cameroon is in the process to pass a law that is aiming to regulate the practice of traditional medicine in Cameroon. In the mean time, traditional practitioners should respect the ethics of the profession and set their approach to respect the safe amount of doses in preparing any medicine, respect the privacy of the patient and be honest with the knowledge they hold.

The lack of regulation on the practice of traditional healers puts the people in the Cameroonian society at risk. There are no regulations to manage the follow-up, record-keeping or accountability of any kind on the practice.
