Pre-market notification or registration with the National Organization for Medicines is necessary for all food supplements. Botanicals are either considered food or medicine. The purpose of a food supplement must be nutritional. Most herbal remedies are considered medicinal. There are lower documentation requirements for traditional herbs. Fortified or Functional Foods - Fortification of food is restricted to dietetic foods. The Ministry of Health must authorize fortification of non-dietetic foods. The Ministry of Health must authorize the addition of botanicals to food. atters that concerns plants genetic resources falls under the responsibilities of the Directorate of Physical Planning and Environmental Protection of the Ministry of Agriculture and its basic operational body is the Greek Gene Bank. Research activities pertaining to aromatic-medicinal plants are part of the national programme carried out by the Greek Gene Bank, the Breeding and Research Institutes of the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF), Universities and private entities. Greece has implemented the reformed EU Common Agriculture Policy, which focuses on the establishment of a common organisation of agricultural markets across member countries, which also covers the sector of medicinal plants and herbs. A major new reform of the CAP is currently being prepared for the period after 2013.

Standards & Guidelines

The National Medicines Agency (EOF) was founded in 1983 by Law 1316 and is a Legal Entity of Public Law at the Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity.

The EOF is administered by five-member Board who works closely with other related organisations in European Union, set up 24 scientific committees and councils, among them are: Scientific Council Approval, Pharmacovigilance Committee, Scientific and Ethical Committee Approval Clinical Trials,Pharmacopoeia Commission, Committee on National Formulary, Cosmetology Commission, Medical Assistance Commission and Secondary Science Council.

Greece is also one of EU and OECD member countries, and follows the simplified regulatory approval process on Traditional herbal medicinal products under the EU Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products (THMPD) formally known as The Directive 2004/24/EC.
