Laws

The Ministry of Public Health, Welfare and Sport has issued a new Commodities Act Decree which covers herbal products.  In general, botanicals are regulated under the same laws as conventional durgs.  Health and nutrition content claims are allowed.  Most food supplements do not require notification if they are considered safe and do not contain any of the ingredients listed as restricted.

Market notification with the Ministry of Public Health, Welfare, and Sport is necessary for fortified and functional food.

Manufacturing of botanical medicines is the same as for drugs and regular plant inspections take place to insure compliance.

There is no post marketing surveillance program in place.
