Abstract

Iran as an ancient country with a great heritage of culture and civilization is located in west Asia. The vestiges and manuscripts remained from prehistoric time revealed the importance of medicinal plants in the medico-pharmaceutical system of this land. Global approach to herbal medicines for treatment and health care, made us to consider briefly the early history of medicinal plants in ancient Iran, with this hope that could be valuable for today’s researches. There are several valuable documents regarding the names and uses of these plants for various ailments. It should be mentioned that determination the exact scientific names for these plants is very delicate and even impossible in some cases. However, some of these plants are given probable scientific name through a logical reasoning. Various species and numerous variants is the next problem in conformity of ancient names with scientific names of these plants. In this article, some of these herbal medicines, their ancient names, common Persian and equivalent English names and attributed botanical names as well as their indications will be discussed in the text.
