Abstract

Natural product from plants is rich in antioxidant activities that can neutralize free radicals. These antioxidants constitute a broad range of compounds including phenolics and carotenoids. In the present study, the leaves and stems extracts (hexane, methanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate) ofP. rotundifolia(Tapak Sulaiman) were assayed for antioxidant activities. The antioxidant activities of these extracts were assessed by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and β-carotene bleaching method and total phenolic content assay.  For the DPPH assay results were expressed as percentage of inhibition relative to control (% AA-Antioxidant activity). The highest antioxidant activity was detected in methanolic extracts (leaves- 83%; stem-53%) in comparison with the BHT 5.0 mg/ml (96%) and catechin 5.0 mg/ml (96 %) as standards. The phenolics content was measured using GAE (gallic acid equivalent) mg gallic acid/ g of plant extract. The phenolics contentP. rotundifoliaplant extracts ranges from 5.331 X 10 -3 to 0.149 mg and well correlated with the antioxidantactivity (R2= 0.8376).
