Abstract

The paper will focus on the therapeutic tradition of the ancient and medieval Mediterranean world. It will show how ancient data can constitute a source of fundamental importance for the understanding of the therapeutic action of plants. To this end, it will present the research program “Medicinal Plants of Antiquity”, which aims at creating a comprehensive database on the medical uses of plants in classical Antiquity, from the Corpus Hippocraticum (5th cent.B.C. to 2nd cent. A.D.), Dioscorides (1st cent.A.D.) and Galen (129-after 216 A.D.). It will then focus on some case-studies that illustrate particularly the content and potential of the research program.
