Abstract

Astragalus specieses are a group of medicinal herb that has been widely use for the treatment of inflammatory disease, nephritis, tumors, diabetes and various cardiovascular diseases. This study was to evaluate anti diabetic activity of methanolic leaf extract ofAstragalus ovinusin streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Albino male rats were divided into four groups (n=6) that receiving the methanolic leaf extract ofA.ovinusat different doses of 300, 400, and 600 mg/kg, respectively. After 15 days of drug administration, blood glucose was estimated. The oral application extract at doses of 300, 400, and 600 mg/kg, showed statistically significant reduction of blood glucose by 21.6, 34.9 and 45.1 percent respectively, when compared with the diabetic control group (P<0.05). The results indicated that the methanolic leaf extract ofA.ovinushas a significant hypoglycemic effect in streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats. The findings from this study suggest thatA.ovinusmay be prescribed as adjunct to dietary therapy and drug treatment for controlling diabetes mellitus.
