Abstract

Some Polygonum species, viz., P. hydropiper, P.hydropiper f. purpurascens and P. punctatum var. punctatum produce pungent sesquiterpene polygodial which shows strong mosquito repellent, antimicrobial and fish killing activities, together with its related drimane sesquiterpenoids.  Some ferns, Thelypteris hispidula and Blechnum fluviatile also biosynthesize the polygodial.  A new bitter stylene glucoside which inhibited oviposition behavior of the fruit fly Ceratitis capitata was isolated fromElaphoglossum spathulatumalong with  farnesane-type sesquiterpenoids. FromHymenophyllum barbatum,  24 new bitter hemiterpene glycosides possessing anti-diabetic activity were obtained together with their aglycones. The distribution of polygodial and its related drimanes in higher plants, ferns and liverworts will be discussed.
