Abstract

Piper betleL. is well known for its use as masticatory, which consists of fresh betel leaf, betel nut and slaked lime paste. The extract of betel leaf is reported to exhibit various useful bioactivities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antimutagenic. Batch extractions of betel leaf extraction were conducted using distilled water as solvent. The yield of each extraction was determined to study the effects of the operating parameters including temperature, duration and solvent to sample ratio. The extracts were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography to study their chemical profiles.
