Abstract

During the course of our continuing search for novel bioactive compounds from Indonesian plants, the methanol extract of Erythrina subumbrans showed significant paralytic activity against the third instar larvae of silkworm (Bombyx mori). The methanol extract was separated by  bioassay-guided fractionation using column chromatography to yield paralytic alkaloids i.e. erythratidinone (1), 3-demethoxyerythratidinone (2), erysotrine (3), erythratidine (4) and two new erythrina alkaloids (5) and (6). The chemical structures of the compounds were identified based on spectroscopical evidences and comparison with those previously reported. The compounds showed paralytic activity against the third instar larvae of silkworm with their respective ED50 values of 15, 26, 9, 7, 70, and 44 μg/g diet upon oral administration.
