Abstract

Guttiferae family is well known to be a rich source of xanthones, especially the genus Garcinia. Various bioactivities such as anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-HIV have been reported from this genus. Seventeen species ofGarciniawere screened for antitumour activity andGarcinia urophyllawas selected due to its high activity (IC50 3 μg/ml) against MCF-7 (hormone dependent breast cancer cell lines). Three prenylated xanthones; 1,5-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-2-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone (1), 1,7-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-2-(3-methyl-2-butenyl) xanthone (2) and 1,3,7-trihydroxy-2-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)xanthone (3) were isolated and tested for antitumour activities on three types of cancer cell lines; MCF-7, DU-145 (hormone independent prostate cancer) and H-460 (non-small lung cancer). Compound 1 showed the most potent activity with IC50 value of 2.0±0.5 µg/ml against MCF-7 cell lines.
