Abstract

In this study, different types of new palm oleins were used in the formulation of pharmaceutical aqueous creams. From the microbiological tests, it was found that all the aqueous creams prepared by using the new palm oleins have biggger zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa than those prepared by using paraffin products. Particle size analysis of the various creams has shown that palm olein creams have relatively smaller particle sizes. For aqueous cream using paraffin product, the mean particle size is 9.059 µm (95% conf. limits 8.169-9.950 µm and standard deviation 4.543 µm). For the aqueous creams using various new.palm oleins the mean particle sizes are between 3.559 µm (95% conf. limits 3.363-3.755 µm and standard deviation 1.00 µm) to 4.972 µm (95% conf. limits 4.394-5.549 µm and standard deviation 2.946 µm). The effect of various emulsifying speed and emulsifying time used during formulation have also been studied. The results obtained indicate that there is great potential in using the new palm oleins as the oily phase in pharmaceutical creams in the near future.
