Gynura aurantiaca; ß-sitosterol; stiginasterol; 3 ß -O- ß -D-glucopyranosylsitosterol;3 ß -0- ß -D-tetra-0-acetylglycopyranosylsitosterol.

The petroleum ether extract of the leaves of Gynura aurantiaca on purification by silica gel column chromatography and TLC afforded a mixture of sterols containing ß -sitosterol and stigmasterol. From the chloroform extract, a mixture of steroid glycosides 3 ß -0-B-D-glucopyranosyl sitosterol (major) and 3 ß -0- ß -D-glucopyranosylstigmasterol (minor) was isolated. Acid hydrolysis of the glycosides gave the aglycone, a mixture of ß -sitosterol and stigmasterol which was identified by TLC and spectroscopic evidences. The sugar part was identified as D-glucose by TLC method. Acetylation of the glycosides with pyridine-acetic anhydride, 3 ß -0- ß -D-tetra-0-acetylglucopyranosylsitosterol was isolated and identified by IR, 1H and 13C NMR.
