Abstract

Studies on the biotransformation of several synthetic diterpene analogues with plant cell cultures of Tripterygium wilfordii and the fungus, Aspergillus fumigatus, are described. These enzyme-catalyzed processes allow introduction of oxygen functions (hydroxyl and carbonyl) into rings A and B of the diterpene skeleton to afford novel analogues. An interesting epoxidation reaction is observed in biotransformation with the plant cell culture system. The products obtained bear a close structural relationship to the natural products, tripdiolide and triptolide.
