Abstract

The crude water extract of the Malaysian sea cucumber or gamat (Stichopus spl) significantly prolongs (P<0.01) the reaction time of rats to conditioned-avoidance-response, (CAR), using sound and light as the conditioned stimulus (CS) and electric shock, as the unconditioned stimulus (UCS). However the escape response remained intact. The CAR was also prolonged by aspirin, which was less potent than the crude water extract.
