Abstract

Upon investigating  the effect of the extracts of Raphanus sativus, Linn. (Family Cruciferae) and the propolis of Trigona sp on the growth of calcium oxalate crystals in comparison to the commercially available drugs and known chemical inhibitors, we found that the test plants do exhibit inhibitory properties. Therefore these plants should be investigated further as it could be used as a prophylactic agent to prevent recurrence of urinary stone formation. Inhibition or promotion of crystal growth was determined by measuring the area of individual crystals using the Quantimet Image Analyser Q520.
