Abstract

The steam distilled extracts of Malaysian red bee and mangrove swamp honeys were analysed by GC-MS and four classes of compounds were found to be present, hydrocarbons, oxygenated and nitrogenous compounds, and compounds with both oxygen and nitrogen. More components were identified from red bee honey compared to mangrove swamp honey. The percentage composition of hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds were larger than the other two classes of compound. The three major components in both honeys were ethyl hexadecanoate ester, ethyl 9-octadecenoate ester and diisooctyl benzenedicarboxylate ester. Both types of honey also showed strong antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria but only mangrove swamp honey was capable of inhibiting certain Gram negative bacteria.
