Abstract

Women are more prone than men to arthritis and related disease causing inflammation and joint pains. Various herbs rich in quercetin were used to control uric acid in gout; Salicin from Salix alba in controlling the inflammation related to osteoarthritis whilst tumeric and ginger have been used in rheumatoid arthritis. The high phenolic contents of O. stamineus contribute to its traditional uses in the treatment of various ailments including gout and kidney stones. It may be important in inhibiting oxidative stress mechanism that leads to degenerative diseases caused by lipid peroxidation products and reactive oxygen species. Studies in qualitative and quantitative profiling of O. stamineus involve the detection and estimation of marker compound representing the flavonoids, tritepenes and caffeic acid derivatives.  The antioxidant studies involve free radical and superoxide anion scavenging activities using DPPH and PMS-NADH-NBT methods, β-carotene and linoleic acid assays and xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition activity. The leaf extracts showed antioxidative activity and inhibition of XO comparable to quercetin and allopurinol and higher than BHA and trolox. In vivo antioxidant studies on isolated rat liver tissues showed decreased catalase and superoxide dismutase levels whilst lipid peroxidation levels increased. Histopathological studies of liver cells showed marked reduction in fatty degeneration. The leaf extracts are capable of maintaining the activity of hepatic enzymes involved in combating reactive oxygen species.
