Emodin; Physcion; Anthraglycoside B; Emodin-8-b-D-glucopyranoside; b-sitosterol; Polygoacetophenoside; 2, 3, 4, 6-tetrahydroxy acetophenone-3-O-b-D-glucopyranoside. (1) , (2) , (3) , (4)

Precautions

There have been reports about two cases where patients experienced an adverse reaction after taking formulas containing this herb. Symptoms of the adverse reaction included insomnia, itchiness, twinge, shivering, and chattering teeth. After this herb was removed, all symptoms disappeared. (5)

Pharmacology

Tranquilizing and hypnotic effects

Administered to mice at the dosage of 20g/kg, this herb can significantly increase the sleep rate of underdose pentobarbital sodium, and significantly reduce sleep latency. (6)

Anti-tussive effect

Emodin, an active component of this herb, is a known antitussive. (7)

Lowering cholesterol

Administered to hamsters for ten consecutive days, this herb significantly lowers the cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the serum. Also, experiments show that this herb significantly lowers the total cholesterol level and increase the HDL-C-to-TC ratio in quails of high cholesterol. (8)

Effects on intestinal canal

Both in-vivo and in-vitro experiments show that emodin, an active component of this herb, significantly increases the muscular tension and contraction amplitude of the small intestine. When the dosage and concentration are increased, however, an inhibitory effect is observed on intestinal activities. (9)
