Abstract

Edible bird’s nest (EBN) is only found in Southeast Asia region. It is considered as a delicacy and medicine in the Chinese community throughout the world. The EBN is a lucrative industry as the unprocessed nest itself valued range from RM3000-6000/ kg. The study conducted at Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (CEPP) revealed that EBN consists of eighteen types of amino acids. They are considered natural source of amino acids and are known to aid in skin healing, important in cells' energy production, facilitate regulation of cell function and helps builds up immune system by producing immunoglobulins and antibodies. The finding also shows that sialic acid (0.1 – 2 %) is the major constituent of carbohydrate compound identified in EBN.  Despite its role of acting as a “decoy” for invading pathogens, sialic acid is becoming known as an agent necessary for mediating gaglioside distribution and structure in the brain.  It was found that an exogenous source of sialic acid may contribute to neurological and intellectual advantages in infants. The partially purified glycoprotein extract from EBN has an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like activity and mitogenic effects.  The protein is recognized to improve the immune functions for accelerating the cell development.   In mammals, EGF stimulates the proliferation of various epidermal and epithelial tissues and in cell cultures where it stimulates cells division. Recently, our research show the extract provides a positive stimulation towards fibroblast and chrondrocyte cells and  these exciting discoveries continue to add on the functional value of the EBN. We believe the functional properties of EBN have more to be discovered, with the advancement of technology, it would be capable to place the EBN as one of the valuable traditional Chinese medicine with scientific explanation and justification.
