Abstract

Ficus deltoidea is one of our Malaysian traditional herbs that is popularly known for its own therapeutic value. This study is to compare both aqueous and ethanolic extract towards human ovarian carcinoma cell line or A2780. MTT assay and fluororochrome staining were performed to see the growth pattern of this cell line and the apoptosis effect of both extracts. The IC50 values (the concentration of extract that can inhibit 50% of cell growth) of each extracts are 126.95ug/ml and 195.166ug/ml respectively. The IC50 value of the water extract is much lower than the ethanolic extract. However, the ethanolic extract shows lower viability value of 7.33% at the concentration of 250ug/ml compared to aqueous extract with viability value of 28% at the same concentration. The fluorochrome staining or the analysis of cell death by fluorescence microscopy using acridine orange and ethidium bromide double staining was used in this study. Morphological changes and characteristic of the apoptotic body were observed after treatment with both extracts.
