Abstract

The Malaysian Standard (MS) for Tongkat Ali was drafted to fulfill the needs of the herbal industry considering the huge potential of T. Ali products in the local and international market. Inputs from research and development by the public and private sectors were considered and formulated. Authenticity, safety, quality and efficacy parameters and details for the production of the standardised extracts and limits of indicative substances were included. The MS document will served as the basis for the technical specifications used for regulatory and trade purposes in compliance with international practices.  The drafting requires data generated through R & D and harmonising the procedures and protocols is important as acceptance and credibility of the data must be accepted by all parties concerned. Researchers and developers of herbal products are highly encouraged to contribute their findings and enabling SIRIM to formulate a comprehensive MS representing both the public and private sector.   Other herbal products are in the pipeline and details will be presented.
