Abstract

This study presents the compression characteristics of a Malaysian herb extract from Orthosiphon staminues, also known as 'misai kucing'. This herb has been used due to its medicinal and nutritional advantages. The main purpose of this project is to investigate the compression characteristics of the extract which is important for downstream processing in herbal industries. A commercial universal testing machine with a 13-mm-cylindrical stainless steel uniaxial die was used to compress the extract. A range of pressure from 7.5 to 74 MPa was applied with a compression speed of 5 mms┬╣. The results were presented through tensile strength and pressure-volume relationship in order to study the effect of the quantity of feed powder. Four classical compression models were used to validate the data, namely, Heckel, Kawakita, Walker, and Cooper-Eaton. Amongst the four models used, it was found that 0.5 g tablet feed powder compressed more easily compared to 1.0 g tablet, at the same compression force. As for the tensile strength test, the tensile strength of compressed 0.5 g feed powder was the strongest. Based on this simple approach, a better understanding of the compression characteristics of this herb was obtained which would be essential for the further development of herbal industries in Malaysia.
