Abstract

The standardization of medicinal plant marker components is a great interest to the herbal industry and also for researchers in the field. Medicinal plant standardization is important to maintain product consistency and repeatability in the compositions. For standardization, two main factors should be considered; determination of marker components and profile of standard samples. Fast, non-destructive means of medicinal plant marker component detection are now feasible using electronic nose (E-Nose) and electronic tongue (E-Tongue) systems. The E-Nose consists of an array of gas sensors based on piezoelectric principles using lipids and gas chromatographic stationary phase materials of different selectivity pattern. The sensors measure the frequency changes due to the adsorption of volatile vapors on its surface. Meanwhile, the E-Tongue consists of lipid polymer membrane electrodes (to mimic tongue) for the analysis of liquid samples. The measurement principle is based on potentiometric principles, where the voltage difference between the electrodes and the reference electrode need to be monitored. The E-Nose and E-Tongue systems consist of partially selective sensors, high sensitivity, cross selective, rapidity and simplicity, which are the ideal tools to quickly and easily establish a reference fingerprint for any medicinal plant. This presentation reviews the recent development of E-Nose and E-Tongue and their application in meicinal plant marker compound detection.
