Abstract

Ficus deltoidea (mas cotek) is another medicinal plants traditionally used and claimed to have remedial and curative potential. One of the claims is use of this plant as uterine contraction agent in post-partum treatment. To investigate the truth of this claim scientifically, we conducted a study on the uterine contraction by studying the changes in sexual behaviour and fertility rate in mice. Male and female ICR mice were first treated with the aqueous leaf and fruit extracts for a week following which serum was extracted and subjected to Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-Page). Behavioural patterns were also observed during this same period. Comparison of the SDS-PAGE profiles showed significant difference (in both pattern and protein expression) between treated and non-treated ICR mice. This suggested that F.deltoidea extracts could play a role in the physiological effects of these differentially expressed proteins. A two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DGE) was also performed to provide a better understanding towards the mechanisms involved.
