Abstract

Corchorus capsularis L. or locally known to the Malaya as 'kancing baju' is a plant that belongs to family Tiliaceae. This plant has been reported to have potential pharmacological porperties such as anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities. In this study, the chemical analysis and fingerprinting based on the stem and leaves were carried out. Phytochemical screening was carried out to detect the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, saponins, steroid, triterpenes, flavonoids and tannins. The moisture content from both parts gave values not more than 10%. This analysis also included aqueous and ethanol extractives, total ash, acid insoluble ash and colour test. the chemical fingerprinting using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) combining with the digital scanning profiling were developed to identify and distinguish the different chemical profiles. It is hoped that the data obtained from this study will offer and provide useful guidance to herbal industries involved in ensuring consistent quality, safety and efficacy of herbal products. This will further enhance the ability of the Malaysian herbal products to penetrate the global market.
