Abstract

Diarrhoea is one of the principle causes of death, particularly in malnourished infants. In order to combat diarrhoea globally, the World Health Organisation in its diarrhoeal disease control programme has given a special emphasis on the use of folklore medicines in controlling and managing diarrhoea. Melastoma malabathricum Linn. (Melastomataceae) is an erect shrub or small tree 1.5 to 5 m tall, found more or less everywhere throughout Malaysia. It is commonly known as "Straits Rhododendron" and locally known as "Senduduk". It is traditionally used to treat diarrhoea. This study was to evaluate the possible anti-diarrhoeal activity of the leaf extract of M. malabathricum to verify the traditional claim on the biological activity of this plant. Mice treated with various concentrations of the aqueous extract (100, 200 and 500 mg/kg p.o.) showed significant (p< 0.05) intestinal fluid secretion induced by MgSO₄ and gastrointestinal motility after charcoal meal administration in the albino mice. These results compared well with the standard drug, Loperamide (5 mg/kg).
