Abstract

Hygrophila auriculata (Schumach.) Heine (Acanthaceae) was descibed in ayurvedic literature as Ikshura, Ikshugandha and Kokilasha, "having eyes like the Kokila or Indian Cuckoo". The plant is widely distributed throughout India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Malaysia and Nepal. All parts of the plant are extensively used in traditional systems of medicine for treating various ailments like jaundice, hepatic, rheumatism, inflammation, pain, urinary infections, oedema and gout. In the present study, hydro-ethanol extract (70%) of aerial parts of H. auriculata was prepared and tested for its hepatoprotective effect against Paracetamol-induced hepatitis in rats. Alteration in the biochemical levels of SGPT, SGOT, ALP, Bilirubin, Cholesterol, HDL and tissue GSH were tested in both treated and untreated groups. Paracetamol (2g/kg) enhanced the SGPT, SGOT, ALP, Bilirubin and Cholesterol levels and reduced the serum levels of HDL and tissue level of GSH. Treatment with Hydro-ethanol extract (200mg/ kg and 400 mg/kg) had brought back the altered levels of biochemical markers to the near normal levels (p<0.01) in a dose dependent manner. It was well compared with the standard drug, Silymarin (100 mg/kg).
