Abstract

A  total of six methanol extracts of leaves from selected species In the family Annonaceae, namely, Xylopia elliptica,. X. malayana, Polyalthia rumphii, Pseuduvaria macrophylla, Cyathocalyx ramuliflorus and Goniothalamus macrophyllus were obtained using solvent extraction technique. All samples were investigated for their anti-inflammatory effect by hyaluronidase, lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assays. From hyaluronidase assay, it was found that the estract of P. rumphii showed the highest inhibitory effect with 100% inhibition followed by X. elliptica extract (18.57%) and C. ramuliflorus extract (62.2%). For xanthine oxidase and lipoxygenase assays, all extracts gave low activity except for X. malayana which showed moderate activity (74.2%) in xanthine oxidase assay. Extract of Pseuduvaria macrophylla showed no activity in hyaluronidase and xanthine oxidase inhibitory assays.
