Abstract

Eurycoma Iongifolia or locally known as ‘Tongkat Ali’ is a single stemmed slow growing understorey tree of the rainforests of Southeast Asia. It is used throughout the region as an herbal medicine and tonic. The active ingredients are concentrated in the root. In this paper, we employed Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-1R) and two-dimensional correlation (2D) technique to analyse and compare the root materials of E. Iongifolia collected from three different localities. The results showed that FT-1R spectra had small differences and their secondary derivative spectra enhanced spectral resolution also had some obvious dissimilarity. Furthermore, using the pattern of 2D-IR correlation spectra under thermal perturbation, the spectral resolution was greatly enhanced and excellent macroscopic fingerprint features were obtained rapidly without going through tedious sample extraction.
