Abstract

Senna occidentalis Linn. from the family Fabaceae, a small shrub locally known as ‘kachang kota’, is used in traditional medicine against fevers, tuberculosis, anaemia, liver complaints and as a reconstituent for general weakness and illness. In this study, various extracts from the leaves of S. occidentalis were evaluated for therapeutic potential as anti-inflammatory agents. The anti-inflammatory activity was tested using the hyaluronidase, lipoxygenase and xanthine oxidase assays as well as an animal model of TPA- induced ear oedema. All the extracts showed some degree of inhibitory activity against the enzymes. The most significant activity was found in the ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts, which gave 100% and 99% inhibitory activity at 100 µg/ml against the enzymes lipoxygenase and hyaluronidase, respectively. The hexane extract also demonstrated profound activity in both assays, while the ethyl acetate extract was the only one found to be effective in the xanthine oxidase assay with inhibition of 76%. In the TPA-induced ear oedema model, low to moderate activity was observed for all the extracts, with the dichloromethane extract being the most active with inhibitory activity of 73% at concentration 2 mg/ear. This study provides a scientific basis for the use of this plant for the treatment of inflammation-related illnesses.
