Abstract

Stachytarpheta jamaicencis is a shrubby plant belonging to the family Verbenaceae. In Malaysia, the plant is known as jolok cicing or selaseh dandi. The plant has been reported to have anti-microbial, anti-diarrhoeal, antioxidant, and anti-diabetic properties. The aim of the present study was to provide in vivo evidence fur anti-diabetic properties of the ieaf extract of S. jamaicensis. The ethanol extract of S. jamaicensis significantly suppressed the rise in blood glucose after 30 mm in the acute glucose tolerance test in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In the sub-chronic investigation, after 21 days of treatment, the extract significantly reduced blood glucose level in diabetic rats. These results suggested that S.jamaicensis possessed an arti-hyperglycaemic property.
