Abstract

The search for new pharmacologically active agents obtained by screening natural sources such as plant extracts has led to the discovery of many clinically useful drugs that play a major role in the treatment of human diseases. The objective of this study is to look for a potential source of lipoxygenase inhibitor from selected medicinal plants. A total of 34 methanol extracts from 15 species of Malaysian medicinal plants were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against soybean 15-lipoxygenase (15-sLO). Results showed that the stem extracts of Garcinia man gostana and Coniothalamus umbrosus exhibited very high activity against lipoxygenase assay. The leaf and fruit extracts of G. mangosfana, root extract of G. umbrosus and the leaf extracts of Thespesia populnea showed high activity (more than 70% inhibition) at concentration 100 g/ml.
