Abstract

The major compounds of the leaf oil of Xylopia malayana (Annonaceae) and their antimicrobial activities were investigated. The major monoterpene compounds included β- pinene, α- pinene, terpinen-4-ol and linalool. The antimicrobial activities were investigated using the Single Concentration Test (SCT) and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) against 11 microorganisms. These microorganisms included fungi, Methicillin Resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The oils showed inhibitory activity against all microorganisms tested except for Gram-negative bacteria. The overall rating for antimicrobial activities of X. malayana components was α-pinene>terpinen-4-ol>liflalool>Pinene.
