Abstract

Calophyllum rubiginosum and Calophyllum inophyllum belong to the family of Clusiaceae (Guttiferae). The plants are big forest trees found in Peninsular of Malaysia. The research is aimed to investigate the bioactivity of C. rubiginosum and C. inophyllum extracts against selected bacteria and cancer cells. The chemical constituents of the plants are also investigated. The extracts were tested for their activity to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial testing was carried out by disc diffusion method. The extracts were also tested for their activity against human cervix carcinoma (Hela S3 cell line). The cytotoxic activity was determined by 1-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-3,5-diphenylformazan (MTT) assay. The results of antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of the extracts were discussed in this paper.
