Abstract

Calophyllum canum or bentangur batu belonging to the family Clusiaceae (Guttiferae) is a forest tree found in Peninsular Malaysia. This research aimed to investigate the bioactivity of C. canum extracts against selected bacteria and cancer cell line. The chemical constituents of this plant were also investigated. The extracts were tested for their activity to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial testing was carried out by the disc diffusion method. The extracts were also tested for their activity against human cervix carcinoma (Hela 53 cell line). The cytotoxic activity was determined by 1-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-3,5-diphenylformazan (MTT) assay. The results of antibacterial and cytotoxic activities will be discussed in this paper.
