Abstract

Syzygium is a genus of about 500 species from the family Myrtaceae, occurring in tropical and subtropical rainforests. Many are of economic importance as cultivated fruits. Plants of this genus are reported to be strongly antiseptic, astringent, expectorant and tonic with anti-viral properties. Twelve plant extracts from four Syzygium species; namely, Syzygium aromaticum (bunga cengkih), S. malaccense (jambu bol), S. jambos (jambu mawar) and S. grande (kelat jambu laut) were evaluated for antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. The antioxidant activities were determined using superoxide scavenging assay. DPPH radical scavenging assay and tyrosinase inhibition assay. Extracts SML, SAFS and SAFL exhibited high antioxidant properties. The antibacterial activities were determined via minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) test against Escherfchia coli (ATCC 10536), Pseudomonas aerognosa (ATCC 27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213 alfa). Extracts SGL and SAFL showed antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus alfa.
