Abstract

The analgesic effect of Garcinia nigrolineata extract was assessed using the acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction model and formalin test. The extract (60-600mg/kg) caused a dose dependent inhibition on abdominal constriction induced by acetic acid (51.76% - 73.33%). The extract also significantly (P<0.05) inhibited both phases of the formalin test suggesting the direct effect of the extract on the nocciceptor and to some extent, an inhibitor of endogenous inflammatory mediators. Moreover, pre-treatment with naloxone (an opioid receptor antagonist) failed to modify the analgesic effect of the extract, suggesting that the oploid system was not involved in this effect.
