Abstract

Medicinal and aromatic plant (MAP) products are available in a vast array of use and claims. Healthcare products are closely regulated since claims ranging from cosmetic to serious diseases have been attributed to MAPs. Features related to quality, safety and efficacy are essential to assure MAP products can optimally serve its uses and claims. Various rules and regulations are implemented by regulatory bodies worldwide and the vital role of monographs and standards are emphasized. Quality control parameters determine the authenticity, qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the raw materials and final products with a view to regulate and standardize MAPs, since properties that are ‘consistently inconsistent’ seem to be the norm of such materials due to various Intrinsic and extrinsic variations and influences. Assuring safety of MAP requires the understanding of the potential presence of intrinsically toxic constituents and the determination of several toxicity tests are essential. The presence of contaminants and adulterants ranging from microbes, heavy metals, toxins and drugs necessitates appropriate safety measures to be incorporated, Efficacy of MAPs Is by virtue due to the presence of phytochemicals having pharmacological and nutritional properties needed by man. Comprehensive phytochemical database of MAP facilitates the search for appropriate and relevant in vitro and in vivo studies to be done. Confirmation of efficacy on animal models is done to furnish the preclinical data before embarking on the clinical trials. For MAPs to be relevant for current healthcare industrial needs, quality, safety and efficacy must be built-in and tested for. Industrial players with the conscious mindset on quality, safety and efficacy are set to prosper.
