Abstract

Beakea fructesens L. or locally known as cucur atap was collected from FRIM Setiu Research Station, Terengganu. The whole fresh plant materials were subjected to four extraction methods viz. solid-phase microextraction (SPME), head-space (HS) extraction, conventional hydrodistillation (HD) and microwave assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) with the chemical components analysed by GC and GCMS. For the first two methods, the fresh samples were used directly for analysis without any pre-treatment or processing. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of fresh samples analysed using the SPME and HS method showed the presence of nearly 25 and 20 volatile constituents, respectively. On the other hand, about 60 and 50 constituents were found in the distilled oils using HD and MAHD methods, respectively. The peaks in GC chromatogram with area percentage of more than 10% were considered as major constituents. The major chemical constituents in the oil from SPME method were γ-terpinene (36.62-38.57%), o-cymene (15.83-16.24%), α-pinene (10.10-11.68%) and 1,8-Cineole (10.95- 10.10%). Whereas the major components in oil from HS method only detected γ-terpinene (25.94-34.69%), α-pinene (24.71-35.18%) and o-cymene (12.32-13.82%). In hydrodistilled and microwave distilled oils, the major constituents were similar to HS but with different percentages of concentration. Other appreciable amounts of linalool, terpinolene, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, α-humulene, β-caryophyllene and geraniol were also identified. Baeckeol, a chemical marker for this species was detected only in oils from HD, MAHD and SPME methods.
