Abstract

Serum levels of proteinases and vitamin C in rats were used as indices to evaluate the wound healing potential of aqueous and organic (ethyacetate) extracts of fresh leaves of Zapoteca portoricensis (Jacq.) H.M. Hern. Thirteen groups (A-M) of the animals (6 in each group) were used. Groups A, B. C, D, E, and F were treated with 50, 100, 200, 400, 600 and 800 mg/kg body weight respectively of the aqueous extract, while groups G, H, I, J, K. and L received the same order of doses of the organic extract for 7 consecutive days. Group M was the control. Physical activity, food and water intake of the treated groups showed a dose dependent decrease (decreased as dose increased), relative to the control. The average body weight of the treated groups also showed dose dependent decrease. The average total protein concentrations of treated groups were not significantly different (p>0.05) from those of the control. The average activity of proteinases was significantly higher (pZ. portoricenses may be useful in the treatment of wounds.
