Abstract

Glasshouse experiments were carried out to investigate the selenium uptake by Mas cotek (Ficus deltoidea) at various selenium additions in limed and un-limed soils treated with phosphorus fertilizer. There were two levels of lime (0 & 2 t/ha of CaCO3), two levels of phosphorus (0 & 45 kg of P/ha) and five levels of selenium (0, 10, 20, 40 8 50 g of Se/ha) in a completely randomized factorial design with four replicates. During transplanting, selenium was added as sodium selenite and was applied in solution to the soil. After four months, the plants were harvested for selenium analyses. Selenium analyses were done using the dry ash method and determined with the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. From this study. there was significant difference in selenium uptake between limed and un-limed soils. Selenium Uptake was the highest in plants grown in limed soils compared to the un-limed soils. There was also significant difference in selenium uptake in which phosphorus fertilizer was added that showed that the selenium uptake by Mas cotek increased progressively with addition of phosphorus fertilizer. In addtiiton, selenium uptake by Mas cotek also significantly increased with selenite application, and the highest selenium uptake was recorded in limed soils with addition of phosphorus fertilizer at 50 g Se/ha.
