Abstract

There are few scientific studies conducted on the fruits of Ficus deltoidea, This study was Intended to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous fruit extract of F. deltoidea Jack var. angustifolia (Miq.) Corner. Investigation of various dosages of 10 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg was conducted by using two inflammatory models, namely, carrageenan-induced paw oedema test and cotton pellet-induced granuloma test. For the reference group and control group, 10 mg/kg diclofenac and 0.5ml/kg distilled water were used, respectively. Briefly, in carrageenan-induced paw oedema test, the treated group was administered intraperitoneally prior to the injection of 1% carrageenan (0.1 mL of 10-3 g/mI) solution into the sub-plantar surface of the left hind paw of the rats. Paw size was measured by using plethysmometer for every 1/2 hour in a five hour period. In the cotton pellet granuloma test, the sterile cotton pellets were implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of the dorsal thoracic vertebrae region of the rats. Two hours after the implantation and for the next six days, the treated groups were administered intraperitoneally according to their respective dosages. On the eighth day the pellets were removed to record the wet and dry weight. In the carrageenan-induced paw oedema test, significant inhibition of paw oedema was observed in the aqueous extract (p<0.05) compared to the negative control group. The results showed that the aqueous extract significantly reduced the progressive oedema from one to five hours post-dosing in a dose-dependent manner. No significant difference was observed between the three dosages of extract compared to diclofenac. While in the cotton pellet-induced granuloma test, the fruit extract of F deltoidea at the three dosages revealed significant differences (p<0.05) in both anti-transudative and anti-proliferative effects when compared to the negative control group. The extract showed more anti-transudative effect than anti-proliferative effect as the inhibition of anti-transudative for 100 mg/kg was highly significant compared to diclofenac. In conclusion, aqueous fruit extract of F. deltoidea var. angustifolia possessed both acute and chronic anti- inflammatory activities and it could be beneficial in the management of inflammatory disease states.
