Abstract

Malaysia is one of the oldest tropical rainforests in the world with more than one thousand species with medicinal properties. Many of these plants can be eaten raw as ‘salad’ or as ingredients in cooking. In addition, some of these plants have also been used in traditional remedies in treating skin infection related disease. Therefore, there is a high potential for some of these plants in combating various pathogenic bacteria. In the present study, 17 species including Andrographis paniculata, Boesenbergia rotunda, Centella asiatica, Cosmos caudatus, Curcuma xanthorrhiza, Gynura procumbens, Justicia gendarussa. Kaempferia galangal, Lawsonia inermis, Melicope lunu-ankenda, Morinda cintrifolia, Murraya koenigii, Piper betle, Piper Iongum. Psophocarpus tetragonolobus, Sesbania grandiflora and Talinum tnangulare were selected in order to study their antimicrobial activity on selected pathogenic bacteria using disk diffusion method. The samples were washed and then dried at 40°C in the oven for two days. The dried samples were blended into coarse powder and extracted with methanol. Six pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Campylobacter jejuni  ATCC 29428, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 13311, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 and Escherlchia coli ATCG 25922 were tested according to National Committee of Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) 2001 standard method with some modification. Results of the study showed that A. paniculata, B. rotunda. C. caudatus, C. xanthorrhiza, K. galanga, L. inermis, M. lunu-ankenda, M. koenigii and P. betle extracts had antimicrobial effect compared to others. It was interesting to note that the plants showed selective antimicrobial effect on certain pathogenic bacteria. Escherichia coli and S. typhimurium showed high resistant toward these plants and only can be inhibited by P betle and L. inermis.
