Abstract

Chemical studies on the leaves of Aquilaria crassna Pierre (Gaharu) yielded three compounds. 5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-(4-methoxyPhenyl)-4H- I -benzopyran-4-on, squalene and epifriedelanol. The compounds were elucidated according to spectroscopic data mainly from 1H NMR, 13C NMR, lR, UV, GC-MS, LC-MS and by comparison with literature data. Crude leaf extracts using methanol, hexane and dichloromethane solvents were tested for antimicrobial activity. All crude extracts showed the large inhibition zone toward Staphylococcus aureus but medium zones toward Bacillus spizizenii and Shigella flexneri.
