Functions
Shuang Liao Hou Feng aids in clearing away heat and poison, relieving inflammation, and acts as an analgesic. It is used to treat the following conditions: retropharyngeal abscess, aphthous stomatitis, gum swelling and pain, otitis media, and skin perforations caused by heat-poison.
Dosage Info
Powder: For the syndromes of oral cavity and throat, the powder was sprayed, 3 times daily. For abscess of nasal sinus, small quantity was sprayed into nose, 5 times a day. For otitis media suppurativa, 3% hydrogen peroxide was used to wash and then the powder sprayed, once a day. For skin ulceration, the local part was cleaned and then sprayed with the product, once a day.

Precautions
The powder was administered to mice by intraperitoneal injection. LD50 was 733.7mg/kg. (1)
There was one case of a clinical application of the powder that induced a drug-like allergic skin rash. (2)
The affected part must always be cleaned before spraying the medicine. If applied to the mouth and throat, the patient must wait 30 to 60 minutes before having a meal. Drinking, smoking, and pungent foods are prohibited.
Pharmacology
Anti-inflammatory effects: This formula can inhibit mouse ear inflammation caused by dimethylbenzene and rat footpad swelling, showing a satisfactory anti-inflammatory effect. (3)
Antiasthmatic effects: Shuang Liao Hou Feng powder has significant effects on the bronchi, showing strong antiasthmatic effect. (4)
Analgesic effects: Shuang Liao Hou Feng powder can increase a mouse’s pain threshold as shown by the twist method, hot plate method, and electrical stimulation method. (5)
Anti-bacterial effects: This powder has shown a strong anti-bacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus, typhoid bacillus, Bacillus dysenteeriae, and catarrhal coccus. (6)
Clinical Applications
Treating otitis media
Wang Yu Lan used Shuang Liao Hou Feng San to treat 55 cases of otitis media. A 3% hydrogen peroxide solution was used to clean the antrum auris. Then the powder was sprayed once a day into the ear for three days, which comprised one course of treatment. The results showed that 32 cases had fully recovered after one course, 17 cases had fully recovered after two courses, 5 cases had fully recovered after three courses, and 1 case had no effectiveness. Treating cervix erosion
Treatment of cervix erosion began with emptying the bladder, and then sterilizing the vulva and vagina, and finally exposing neck of uterus with a speculum. A bromogeramine solution was applied to wash the local wound surface, and then the powder was applied. This treatment was applied once a day for one week. The results showed that all cases had fully recovered after 1 to 7 treatments. Only 6 cases showed recurrence within half a year, but had fully recovered after applying the same treatment again. (8)
Treating bedsores
Liu Ping treated bedsores with this formula. The local sore was first sterilized with alcohol and then sprayed with the powder, twice daily. 7 days established one course of treatment. The total effective rate was 100%. (9)
Treating omphalitis in newborns
The Shuang Liao Hou Feng formula was used in the treatment of omphalitis in newborns. The affected area was washed with warm boiled water, dried with a sterilized dry cotton ball or gauze, and then sprayed with the powder directly, exposing the surface of wound. The powder was used 5 to 6 times a day, while keeping the wound dry. The results showed that 75 cases in the group had recovered in just 1 to 7 days of treatment. (10)
