3.6.4.2 Analysis
The quantities exported were initially high, during the first two years of the observed period but declined thereafter until year 2003. The amounts picked up again and peaked in year 2005. The first peak in year 2000 at a value of 261,366.38 kg while the 2nd peak value was at 248,224 kg. As in other products, the export quantities did not have a consistent profile during the period and the amount traded was essentially based on demand. The revenues obtained from the export did not correspond to the quantities supplied. This is due to variations in the unit costs of the products. The costs per kg of export for each year during the period are fairly high and ranged from RM3.87 to RM28.86. The costs per kg of product also showed irregular profile during the period.
The differences between the annual exports and imports values of cloves during the period, exhibited negative values in years 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2007. This again indicated that exporters had previously committed supplies to their clients, and that the products were consumed locally. The positive values showed annual profit margins for years 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006. The margins ranged from RM1.85 to RM5.47 per kg of the product.
