Policy
In 1998, the Ministry of Health established a national office of TM/CAM. This office is currently in the process of developing regulations and a national programme including a national pharmacopoeia and set of herbal monographs. By March 2010, an updated National Medicines Policy, in support of the goal of access to safe medicines of assured quality at affordable prices to the population, the policy defines the roles and responsibilities of various agencies and organizations and it provides the legal basis for them to act accordingly in implementing the said policy. The National Directorate of Medicines and Medical Supplies (Direcção Nacional de Medicamentos e Equipamentos – DNME) is responsible for developing the strategic planning and implementation of norms regarding medicines. One of the departments responsible in carrying out this duty that is related to the traditional medicine is the Department of Pharmacovigilance and Traditional Medicines. Traditional healers and traditional birth attendants are highly sought after in the rural areas of Angola, in collaboration with the Ministry of Family and Women, and also the Ministry of Health through the health posts, several initiatives by USAID and UNAIDS are vigilantly carrying out trainings and health education campaigns in order to provide basic knowledge to these traditional practitioners in delivering clean and safe services to the communities.

Laws & Regulations
Presently, there are no regulations on herbal medicines; herbal medicines are classified as over the counter medications and no health claims may be made about them. Herbal medicines are sold by licensed practitioners only, however the developing regulations may address new channels of distribution.
There is no post-marketing surveillance program in effect.
