Fenugreek : Interaction with antidiabetic medications

Fenugreek ( Trigonella foenum-graecum ) : Interaction with antidiabetic medications

Interaction type:
Interactions

Interaction rating:
Potential/Theoritical

Based on pharmacology:

Interactions of fenugreek with known antidiabetics metformin have been evaluated in several chemically induced diabetic animal models. The combination of fenugreek (150 mg/kg) and metformin (100 mg/kg) produced a significant reduction in plasma glucose level (20.7%) in type 2 diabetes (1).

In one randomised study, 46 patients taking sulfonylureas with fasting blood glucose levels of 7 to 13 mmols/L were given fenugreek saponins  2.1g (capsule) three times daily after meals for 12 weeks. When compared with 2 similar patients given placebo it was found that fenugreek saponins decreased the fasting blood glucose level by 23% (8.38mmol/L versus 6.79 mmol/L) (2)
