  • General Information

This act is known as the “Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (TAMA) of 1997” and was established in 1999. It is an act that is responsible in the creation of the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAHC), which aims to accelerate the development of traditional and alternative health care in the Philippines. This act also mandates the creation of a Traditional and Alternative Health Care Development Fund and for other purposes related to T&CM.

The objectives of this act are:-

  1. To encourage scientific research on and develop traditional and alternative health care systems that has direct impact on public health care.
  2. To promote and advocate the use of traditional, alternative, preventive and curative health care modalities that has been proven safe, effective, cost-effective and consistent with government standards on medical practice
  3. To develop and coordinate skill training courses for various forms of traditional and alternative health care modalities
  4. To formulate standards and codes of ethical practice of traditional and alternative health care
  5. To formulate standards and guidelines in the manufacture, quality control and marketing of different traditional and alternative health care materials, natural and organic products
  6. To formulate policies to strengthen the role of traditional and alternative health care delivery system
  7. To promote traditional and alternative health care in international and national conventions, seminars and meetings

Several related guidelines have been generated under TAMA 1997 which include:

  1. Guidelines Implementing R.A. 8423 IRR on the National Certification of Acupuncturists and Accreditation of Acupuncture Training Programs, Centers and Clinics
  2. Guideline on the National Certification of Chiropractic
  3. Guidelines Implementing R.A. 8423 IRR on the National Certification of Homeopaths/ Homotoxicologys and Accreditation of Homeopathy/ Homotoxicology Training Programs, Centers and Clinics
